The Great Carousel of Life
As I write this piece, it’s the first day of January 2001, another brand new year made just for you and me. What will you do with it? It has so many potential possibilities, and it is up to each of us to decide what we will do with it.
As I sit here in my favorite chair, my mind goes back 60 years to when I was a small child. New Year’s Eve was an especially exciting time at my house. We kids were allowed to stay up until 12 o’clock to welcome in the new year, that is if we could stay awake that long.
I turn around a few times, and I am sixteen and graduating from school. A whole new world has opened up to me as I study to be a stenographer and soon find a job working at an airplane manufacturing plant.
Turn around again and I am a wife and mother of four beautiful girls with a baby boy on the way. Born on January 5th, he is just a little late to be a new year’s baby. These are busy years and they all pass too quickly.
Like a carousel, I turn around a few more times and my family is all grown with families of their own and I am a grandmother.
Where did the time go? It seems only yesterday I was as a bird with not a care in the world. Life has been good to me. I have no regrets. There have been good times and bad times. There have been happy and sad times too, but all in all I have been blessed. Life has kept me busy and now I think I would like to take some time to stop and smell the roses.
I made a resolution today that I will take life easy this year. I will find more time for me. I love to read, I like to visit and I love to cook, sew and knit. I have a new grandson and want to spend a great deal of time with him. I have a retired husband and maybe we will take some time to travel over back roads and just enjoy the sights.
Life is short, and soon I will turn around again. Who knows where I will be then, so I will do things today, because I don’t know about tomorrow. How about you, is your carousel turning around too fast for you? How do you slow it down? Only you know the answer to this.
Each day is a new beginning, so make sure that you make the most of it. Take time to look around you, smell the roses, do some of the things you’ve been wanting to do for years, but haven’t. Smile a lot and remember God loves you.
Happy new year to all, and may the Lord bless you every day.
